Enabling file extensions and hidden files

When troubleshooting issues on a computer, sometimes it is useful to quickly see at a glance what type of files are present and to see operating system specific files. It is very simple to enable these options:

  • Open file explorer.
  • Click the view tab on the very top of the window.
  • Click the file name extensions and hidden files box.

Once those are both clicked, you will see file extensions at the end of each file (such as .exe, .txt, .docx, etc.) Hidden files will now be visible also and appear semitransparent compared to the other visible files.
